FARWELL MY LOVELY opens. Directed by Dick Richards. Written by David Zelag Goodman from Raymond Chandler's 1940 novel. Second screen iteration of Chandler's jaded private eye Phillip Marloe with a suitably rumpled, droopy-eyed Robert Mitchum in a 1941 Los Angeles-set story that begins as an ostensibly straightforward missing person investigation before morphing into a labyrinthine murder mystery involving a duplicitous femme fatale and a motley collection of some of the city's homicidal lowlifes. Co-starring Charlotte Rampling, John Ireland, Harry Dean Stanton and Sylvester Stallone in a bit part.
