August 5 1953

FROM HERE TO ETERNITY, directed by Fred Zinnermann, from a screenplay written by Daniel Taradash, based on James Jones' 1951 debut novel, premieres in New York to rave reviews. Set in the Schofield Army Barracks at Pearl Harbour, Hawaii in late 1941, just prior to the Japanese attack, the somewhat bowdlerised but still compelling melodrama focuses on the live and loves of a group of officers and servicemen. Burt Lancaster, Montgomery Clift, Deborah Kerr, Ernest Borgnine and Frank Sinatra lead the all-star cast. Film is a box-office blockbuster, winning eight Academy Awards: Best Film, Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Supporting Actor (Sinatra), Best Supporting Actress (Donna Reed), Best Cinematography (Burnett Guffey), Best Editing (William Lyon) and Best Sound (John P. Livadary).
