From Here To Eternity, directed by Fred Zinnerman, from a screenplay written by Daniel Taradash, based on James Jones' 1951 debut novel, premieres in New York to rave reviews. Set in Hawaii in late 1941, just prior to the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbour, the story's analogous melodramatic conceits center on the careerist disillusions and romantic roundelays of three soldiers stationed at the island's Schofield Army Barracks. With Burt Lancaster, Montgomery Clift, Deborah Kerr, Ernest Borgnine and Frank Sinatra leading the all-star cast, the film is a box-office blockbuster, and goes on to win eight Academy Awards: Best Film, Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Supporting Actor (Sinatra), Best Supporting Actress (Donna Reed), Best Cinematography (Burnett Guffey), Best Editing (William Lyon) and Best Sound (John P. Livadary).
