Noir classic The Killers, directed by Robert Siodmak, premieres at New York's Winter Garden Theatre. Written by Tony Veiller (with uncredited input from John Huston and Richard Brooks), from a 1927 short story by Ernest Hemingway, the film unwinds through a series of flashbacks with Edmond O'Brien's insurance investigator looking to unravel the circumstances behind the killing of a former boxer nicknamed "The Swede" (Burt Lancaster in his film debut) by a couple of hit men chillingly played by Charles McGraw and William Conrad. Ava Gardner co-stars. In 1964 Don Siegel directs an updated remake starring Lee Marvin and Angie Dickinson.
