MERRY CHRISTMAS MR. LAWRENCE opens in NY. Directed by Nagisa Oshima. Screenplay by Oshima and Paul Mayerling, from Lauren van der Post's 1963 novel The Seed And The Sower. In 1942, in a Japanese POW facility on the island of Java, two British officers (David Bowie and Tom Conti)clash in brutal game of cultural one -upmanship with the camp's vainglorious, tradition-bound commander (Ryuichi Sakamoto) and his sadistic head guard (Takeshi Kitano). Ryuichi's eclectic score wins him a Best Music BAFTA award.
