Desperado, written and directed by Robert Rodriguez, opens nationally. The film is a big budget quasi-remake to El Mariachi, Rodriguez's seven thousand dollar, Spanish-language shoot-em-up from 1993 which became a modest success after Columbia Pictures came on board with some post production finance. Set in the same small Mexican backwater as the original, a black-clad, smoldering Antonio Banderas slips comfortably into the gunslinging mariarchi's shoes in a revenge odyssey that takes the art of bullet-riddled bodies writhing and falling in slow-motion to new heights of choreographic flamboyance. A sultry Salma Hayek co-stars, along with Steve Buscemi, Cheech Marin and even Quentin Tarantino.
