Adapted by Paul Schrader from Nikos Kazantzakis's controversial 1955 novel,  Provocative, polarising film posits a decidely un-Messiah-like Jesus Christ forsaking the cross for a life of earthly pleasures and domestic bliss. With Willem Dafoe, Harvey Keitel, Barbara Hershey and David Bowie as Pilate.
