Directed by Joseph Sargent,  Colossus: The Forbin Project, a prescient, artificial-intelligence-gone-rogue sci-fi thriller, opens in only a handful of markets. Based on the novel by D.F. Jones, and adapted here by James Bridges (who would go on to direct The China Syndrome and Urban Cowboy), the titular Collosus is a state-of-the-art, fully sentient American defence computer which, in tandem with its opposite number in the Soviet Union, seizes control of the world’s nuclear arsenal, effectively setting itself up as mankind's ruler. Only Charles Forbin, the computer’s brilliant creator, stands in its way. The modestly budgeted, clunky special effects notwithstanding, a smart, solidly crafted doomsday tale with fine work from featured stars Eric Braeden, Susan Clark and William Schallert.
