THE SAINT, directed by Phillip Noyce, from a screenplay by Jonathan Hensleight and Wesley Strick, opens nationally. Leslie Charteris's suave and sophisticated gentleman thief, popularised in a series of films during the 1940s, and the memorable 1960s TV series with Roger Moore, gets ludicrously repurposed as a Bond wannabe in a mindless, clumsily assembled, strictly generic action vehicle with a miscast Val Kilmer as its chief liability. Co-starring Elizabeth Shue as an improbable as "cold fusion" scientist. Terrible.
