Written by director George Miller and James McCauslan, Mad Max premieres in Sydney, Australia. Made on a shoe-string budget, Miller's now classic exploitationer, set along the vast two-lane blacktops of a post-apocalyptic Australian wasteland, stars a young Mel Gibson as a bent-on-revenge highway patrol cop doling out vigilante justice to a vicious biker gang responsible for the murder of his wife. Notable for the balletic precision of its high-speed carnage, the film is a world-wide hit, and makes Gibson a star overnight. Local stars Steve Bisley, Hugh Keays-Byrne and Roger Ward help anchor Miller's inspired, methodical mayhem.Three blockbuster sequels follow.
